intermittently my SSIS Packages which are run through the JOB are failing

Hi SSIS Guru's,

I am facing a very strange problem.

We have 2 Physical Servers (A and B) on which we have installed the SQL Server, one primary (A) and other as secondary (B). And there is a cluster (C) available to acces the running server. I have created some SSIS packages which we installed on the Server A (Primary), and created the job on the cluster server which initiates the SSIS packages, whcih are installed in the File System.

The problem i am facing is the some thing related to Connection time out. And interestingly i am not getting this error Always. Approxiamtely For Every 5 Times once it;s Failing. I am copying the errors Which i encountered in the different runs.

The thing i am confused is why i am not geting the error all the time? And Why am i getting this error all the time in a different data flow task. My SSIS Package structure is I have created one master package and 6 Child packages. I am getting the connection string for the Data base from the Configuration file which is defined in the XML File.

The connection string that i am using is

Data Source=<<server name>>;User ID=DOMAIN\user;Initial Catalog=DatabaseName;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;

Interactive Reporting

Software packages like Microsoft Small Business Accounting and Quickbooks offer a very powerful reporting module that lets end users change grouping, filtering, sorting, etc at run time (having it change the report dynamically infront of them). More importantly, their reporting tools let users click on details on the reports which opens the data in the form based portion of their software.

For example: If the end user pulls up a financial report, lets say "All Bills for February 07", the user get a report of all the bills that have gone out in that time frame. The end user can then click on the actual details in the report, and the Bill will come up in the Windows Forms portion of their software so they edit the bill, or create a new bill.

I have done a very limited amount of reporting in SQL Server, so I am not sure of how they were able to achieve this. If someone could give me some key words or ideas that I can bring up more information from in google, or even on here, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Have you taken a look at Report Builder yet?

Jarret

|||

Possibly... I will have to look that term up shortly to see what it actually is. So far I have just gone through visual studio biz intelligence projects and created new reporting projects. Ive done the wizards, created them manually, but I havent seen any kind of options to set that would actually let an end user interact with the report directly.

Integration Services missing from Management Studio

I have installed SQL Server 2005. I am able to create and edit
Integration services packages from VS but the Management Studio does
not show a folder for Integration Services so I can manage the
packages from within the Management Studio itself. From what I can
tell from the documentation, I should be able to see and manage them
from within Management Studio. What am I missing?

To work with SSIS you need to use Business Intelligence Development
Studio, that is VS. There is not much you can do with SSIS from Mgmt
Studio.

Integration services Globla variable and scheduling issue

I have one main package from which i am executing 5 other packages.I want to use one single DB connection in all the packages which i am declaring in Main package and it should be available in all the child packages. How can i Do this?

Few Variables are common is all the packages so i want to keep it Globally so how can i access those variables ?

How can i schedule package in sql server?

Thanks

You can use package configuration in your children packages based on a parent package variable to set the connection strings.

You meant, how the children packages can 'see' the value of a variable in the parent package? Foe that use package configuration as well as described in the previos answer.

Priyank Gajera wrote:

Using SQL Agent; create a job to run your package. There are a lot of information around that in this forum.

Rafael Salas

|||

Parent Package configurations can get a little tricky. The easiest thing to do is set up an environment variable with your connection string, and then configure your packages to use that environment variable.

To configure your packages go to the SSIS-->Configuration menu, and then in the drop down choose Environment Variable. Map that to the connection string of the connection manager you are using.

Sql Agent will schedule your package to run. You can access it through the Sql Management Studio.

|||

Instead of using variable, Can I use the same connection for child packages which I am using in Main package ?

And if there is no other way then how can I asign a variable value(Connection Staring) to a Ole DB connection manager?

|||

Hi Rafael

Can we share Connections( Ole DB or FTP Comnnection) between packages?

Can you give one example of using parent package variable or if not possible, then please describe me the procedure.

Thanks

Thanks for the answer

I am able to get other variables or values in child package using parent package variable but I don't know how to assign any variable to OLD DB connection manager or FTP Connection manager(I am using both type of connection manager as well as Flat file connection)

So please guide me how to Assign connection string to FTP , OLD DB or Flat file connection managers?|||

The procedure is pretty much described in Sean's post. Basically you need to place the connection string in some place is accessible for package configurations; this is Env. variable, registry key, xml file, etc. and the set the package configuration in you package to go there and 'grab' the connection string and assigned it to the connection string property of you connection manager.

Integration Services

Is there a way to give customers access to SSIS? They need to be able to create their own SSIS packages. Of course we have more then one customer so it would be nice to have modular security in place where they don't get to see customers abc and customer xyz packages. Only their own.

thanks!

Well, sure. But the only way I know of is to buy and install the SQL Server 2005 client tools, since the SSIS designer is essentially Visual Studio. I don't know if there is a SKU for just the client tools though, or if you have to buy one of the SQL Server editions.This page on MSDN has some information about the various editions.

You might check the licensing to see if you can give access to SSIS through Terminal Services, if that makes sense for your environment. But I'm betting that they'll need their own copy of the client tools to use locally.

And SQL Server 2005 has very granular security. It may take some thought and a little effort to get set up the way you need it, but you should be able to secure almost any scenario you encounter.

Don

|||

but how? when I connect as the sysadmin to SSIS there is no way to create users and set permissions. Do you set the permissions in a different location?

|||

You can set permissions using Management Studio, another of the client tools. Or you can write T-SQL code to do the same thing and run it either using the command line SQLCMD tool or through Management Studio.

But I'm not sure I understand. You aren't saying that you want your clients to create users and set permissions, are you? That's an admin function that should be tightly controlled.

Anyway, two different operations, two different tools.

Does that clarify?

Don

|||

In SSIS packages you can provide the security information. Use the property

EncryptAllWithPassword of a dtsx packages. This will allow the user to open or execute the package with the password. Niether they will be able to see the package without the password.

So basically based on customer you can create password and then you can provide them the respective password.

|||

What I am trying to say is this:

Customer A is an admin on his database, nowhere else. I need to be able to give customer A the ability to create SSIS packages for his database. At the same time I don't need him to be able to modify other peoples SSIS packages.

So, where do I set the permissions to give him the ability to create SSIS packeges?

|||

The SSIS packages can be developed regardless of the Sql server. Its not must to have the SQL Server installed on the same machine to develop package.

Also you can save SSIS packages in two ways one if after you created a SSIS packages you can export it to SQL Server Storage or you can save it on File System as well. Both way you will be able to execute the packages.

There is no need to give any one ability to create SSIS packages. He/She can create packages on his/her machine. So that no person will be able to see others packages because they will be on there machine also.

Please read the link... it will help you to do what you want

Integrating SSIS with IBM's Tivoli

Hi,

I have a requirement, where I have to integrate SSIS with IBM's Tivoli for scheduling of SSIS packages. Currently we are doing it using SQL sever Job Agent.

Do any one have Document or link or references, which I can refer to to acheive the above mentioned requirement?

Thanks

Sid

A better resource for you would be Tivoli documentation which explains how to schedule an executable using Tivoli. Then you can schedule DTExec.exe to execute your packages.
