Internal Email subscription fail
email a report both to an external address and internal address. The
subscription worked fine (Mail sent to ... ) in RS. The outside
entity received the email, but the internal entity does not receive
the email. Is there some configuration I'm missing on the exchange
side in order to accept a connection from RS? Thanks

It sounds more like your Exchange Server is filtering out the
extension type (i.e., PDF, MHTML, etc) of the report attached to the
email. Also, I'm not sure what the 'from' email is set to from SSRS;
however, if it is different than what is expected by the Exchange
Server, it may flag it as Spam. Hope this helps.

intermittent locks
Users report problems of various types including timeout messages. We investigate and find a user has acquired a lock which is blocking other users.
We contact the user and they have usually completed their activity and are not always aware of any problem despite them owning a lock.
When the user logs out of the application the lock clears and the system returns to normal.
Indexes have been rebuilt, auto update statistics is on.
Does anyone have any suggestions? :cool:The first thing I'd do is start watching for locks to determine how often they occur, and ask the users if they know of any activity that causes the problems associated with locking/blocking (that may give you clues about what you need to watch).
Once you understand what you are looking for, run a trace using SQL Profiler at the same time as a Performance Monitor trace watching for locking/blocking. The PerfMon trace will show you when the problem occurs, the Profiler trace will show you what caused the problem.
When you understand the cause of the problem, you can then look at changing the application to avoid the problem.
-PatP|||We are trying to gather more information from the users to track this down.
Anecdotally users believe that they have finished their activity and are simply still logged on or are running searches.
We haven't needed to kill a session, the user simply logs off.
It's almost as though the lock has been taken but not released when the activity has finished.
Does this sound likely/possible? If so any ideas what could be causing it?|||Does this sound likely/possible? If so any ideas what could be causing it?Yes, it sounds rather likely.
I'd suspect that the problem is something that the code is doing "behind the curtains" that the user is completely unaware of, but is still causing havok. Until you can compare the two traces (or provide LOTS of additional insight into your application and server configuration), we can only guess.

Intermittent field display
This is either a bug, or I am crazy.
I have developed a report that pulls its data from an SSAS cube. The report is grouped on Fields!FacilityName. On each "page" of the report, I have information for the displayed facility.
At the top of each page in my report I have a textbox whose value is =Fields!FacilityName. Further down on the report I have another text box whose value is set exactly the same. When I preview the report, I always have a value in the upper box, but only sometimes have a value in the lower box. If I change the value in the lower box to just a text string, it will always display, but when I put in the actual field reference it does not. It always doesn't display for the same facility names. Remember, the upper textbox on the form always displays 100% of the time.
I have a Dundas chart in the middle of the page on the report between these textboxes, but another field that pulls parameters and even a matrix all render correctly below that chart.
They both have the same parent according to the properties. I have even copied and pasted the working textbox further down the screen, with no improvement. When I changed the value of the textbox to "=cstr(len(Fields!FacilityName))", on the pages when it wants to be blank, it reads 0, and on other pages it shows a larger number. But the other textbox on the screen will always properly show the FacilityName.
I have also tried changing the name of the textbox, settings output to YES instead of Auto. If I slide the non-working textbox up to the top of the page and the working textbox down to the bottom area of the page, the bevavior switches.
Does anybody know of rendering issues with textboxes showing the same infomation?
Are you running at least SSRS2005 SP1 (on the server and for BI Dev.Studio)?

Maybe there is something buried in the XML of the RDL that I just cannot see in the IDE that is causing the problem.|||I also have a ticket in with Dundas since when I remove the chart off the report, the textbox renders correctly. Perhaps the chart is breaking the recordset in some way.
Intermittent email issue
only works sometimes. Other time it fails with a "Reporting Services
Failure sending mail: Cannot access a closed file" error message.
The report is running off a snapshot that is generated every half hour
and a subscription is setup to email the report to some users. The
snapshot is generated even when the email fails.
It seems the problem is pointed to by userName: [DOMAIN\username]not
found in the database. This seems to be a security problem - but why
would it work sometimes? The log file is below for reference. The user
in question is in the same domain as the report service is running
under.
Environment:
Report service SP2 running on a Windows 2003 EE with SQL Server 2000
Active Director Domain server running on Windows 2003 EE
The report server service is running under a domain account that is in
the local administrator group on the local server.
Has anyone seen this problem?

Experiencing a very similar issue, running SP1. I created a
parameterized report, from which 93 link reports point to. Those 93
linked reports are set to run nightly at 2:00 am by generating a
snapshot (for historical purposes). All 93 snapshots were created
within about 3 mintutes of 2:00 am. The subscription is suposed to
fire an email whenever it is updated, but only half or so are
successful. On those that are unsuccessful, I get no error message at
all.
It seems timed subscriptions work just fine. Perhaps what I will do is
send the email based only on a timed subscription and also create a
snapshot for historical purposes...I would much rather not have to do
double the processor work, as many more reports are needed for
conversion.
Intermittent Drill down Problems
fine. I deployed the same report to the prod server with the same
configuration and I'm getting intermittent problems with the drill
down, it works fine on one users machine, on another when you click the
+, the screen just refreshes and jumps to about the middle of the page.
It does this everytime you try to drill down. Now here is the kicker
the same user can then point at the dev server and the report works
fine. Ive searched this site and at MS all day and can't find a
solution. I appreciate any advice any of you folks might have.
PS I set the logging to Vebose and it didn't tell me anything.
ThanksAlthough I have never seen this... Check all of the Reporting Services Logs
to see if there is anything wierd in there..
Also do a thorough comparison between the Internet Explorer Versions, and
settings between the 2 machines...

Intermittent 401: Not Authorized
"System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401:
Unauthorized." error. If I try to access it again, I get in without a
problem.
In addition to the "first attempt after the iisreset", which happens
consistently, we also intermittently experience the same error, infrequently.
Any idea what is going on here? Caching of Credentials?
Michael DorfmanHello Michael,
To understand the issue better, I'd like to know the following information:
1. Does the issue only occur with a specific RS report or any RS report
such as sample reports including in RS installation?
2. Do you have anonymous access enabled on Report Manager or Report Server
virtual directories?
Also, this issue might be related to a known issue in .Net framework 1.1
sp1, I suggest that you contact CSS to get 887563 installed hotfix 887563
to see if it helps:

situation.

Intergrity of forms and windows Auth
reporting for report purpose ,but report server works on windows
authentication ,due to which dialog box is popping up,i need to know a way of
integratinf the two to have a single sign on Process?Rags,
You have two options:
1. Generating the report on the server side of the application by using the
Render SOAP API. The advantage of this approach is that it is more secure
since the user doesn't see the report URL (everything takes place on the
server). The tradeoff is that the interactive features (drilldown,
drillthrough, etc.) will not work with SOAP since their require direct
access to the Report Server by URL. If you decide to take this approach, you
can pass the web app identity to the Report Server and grant a minimum set
of permissions in RS to this account.
2. Replace the RS Windows security with Forms Authentication by writing a
custom security extension. This will allow you to incorporate interactive
features in your reports. In this scenario, the reports will be requested on
the client side of the application (e.g. by using the Report Viewer sample
control). If you decide to take this approach check out the sample security
extension from MS at
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/?url=/library/en-us/dnsql2k/html/ufairs.a
sp?frame=true#ufairs_topic3).
So, you have to carefully weight out your requirements for security,
reporting features and your application architecture to determine the best
integration scenario.

Hope this helps.

Interesting subscription question...I could use some brainstorming help
Each tehnician handles a different US region so the report will be
driven via a parameter (most likely a technician ID). We don't want
other technicians seeing data for someone elses region. This all has
to be automated, no user interaction with this report other than each
technician getting an email with his/her data (based on his/her
results).
What would be the best way to handle this with a subscription?I do know that this will have to be a data-driven subscription. Is it
possible for the value in a data driven query be used as a parameter in
the report'

to feed the parameter values into a table for the DDS to pull from. I
use both Access DB and Excel spreadsheet uploads to upload subscription
parameters into a SQL Server table, which is then used by the DDS.

Interesting Problem/Bug with Logos in the page header
Scenario:
I have a report with a logo in the page header.
This report has 2 parameters: 1) Date 2) Boolean to Show/Hide detail.
When I put in the date and show the report, everything is fine. If I then change the boolean parameter to show or hide the detail, the logo file cannot be found (Displays a red X)
If I export the report like this, the red X is rendered in the export. The logo is not there.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Anyone know how to resolve it?
Thanks!
BobP
This is a known bug. The fix will be included in the next release.
interesting problem..related to selection criteria..
Have report where the user should be able to enter some selection critera to EXCLUDE from the result set displayed.
I deally Iwould liek to include it in the sql parameters to avoid retunring a larger then necessary result set, but Couldn't I also use it inthe filter criteria?
Has anyone done anything like this.
ie: a drop down box where people could add exclusions.
ie: Apples, Oranges
would be excluded from the result list.
So If I entered Apples, Oranges
the resultset would eclude these from the returned dataset.
I realize using a multi param box is fruitless. WOndering if there is another way to do this
Why wouldn't multi-param work?
Select something from sometable where (@.multiparam is null or fruit not in (@.multiparam))
Does this look ok?
cheers,
Andrew
Interesting custom functionality in Reports ... highlighting?
Hello,
I have a report of processes which either go into a Log table or an Error log table. They also have start / finish datetimes and a timespan value. So I want to report the process elapsed time or the error condition, depending on which table the process finished up in.
I then compare the elapsed time to the timespan and then show either a red flag (errored) green flag(worked within timespan) or yellow flag(worked but ran over allotted time) depending on what happened.
Is this possible?
I think it would be easy for me to get the info I want into a dataset using .net code but how do you link that in with SSRS?
Any help appreciated,
Thanks.
Try putting something like this into the background color property of the textbox you want to highlight:
=Switch(Fields!Error.Value = 1, "Red", Fields!timespan.Value > [AllottedTimeValue] , "Yellow", Fields!timespan.Value <= [AllottedTimeValue], "Green")
Hope this helps.

sqlInteresting conumdrum.. question about filters...
Got a dataset coming from a stored procedure.
There is a parameter I must put on the report that filters the dataset.
the choices are "exclude" and "only", based on that I have to filter my dataset like
if they select exclude then I have to filter where "debitType <> 'Intercompany'"
if they select on;y then I have to filter where "debitType = 'Intercompany'"
Is this at all possible in the filter part?
It is easy as pie in Crystal record selector.
Hello,
Try this as your filter:
Expression: =cBool((Fields!debitType.Value <> "Intercompany" AND Parameters!Param1.Value = "Exclude") OR (Fields!debitType.Value = "Intercompany" AND Parameters!Param1.Value = "Only"))
Operator: =
Value: =cBool(True)
Hope this helps.

|||oh, that's good. didn't knwo you could use epxressions like that in the left side of the filter table.
Thanks alot.
Interesting Challenge..
I am making a report in Visual Studio..Now my question is,is there anyway that i can add a tab control for my rdl?Hope to here from anyone out there with a know how..Thanks guys!!

thanks for the reply, but what im trying to say here,is that,if it is possible to add a "Tab Control" (like what we see in excel) into the rdl..
|||The RDL is being rendered by the ReportView control and thus can't contain any WinForm or WebForm components. You may be able to simulate what you are wanting to do by using the hidden properties of items such as rectangles. If you post or send mock ups of what you are trying to do, I will try and help you build it.

|||I just cant download the source. And as for what you are saying,i had tried some tricks like that, but it seems that it is not very effective. One reason is that,if one sheet in any case is too long, then it will push my custom tab(compose of textboxes with navigation to subreports) to go beneaththe page which not supposed to be.But there is no way that you can make it fixed location right. But as what u said that i cannot add a winform,i may agree to that, thanks. But if you still had any other idea,i would be very greatful to hear that.Thank you so much..And by the way for you too see what i had done,i will send one of my form.If you just want to take a look..

Again,Thanks.... o_O
By the way,i hadn't notice, the one that i had sent to you was the one that i had placed my custom tab(as if it was, hehe) above the page.
|||Why do you need to do it this way? You could make 2 seperate reports, embed them in a HTML page and use some javascript to select different divs which changes between the reports... You also don't have to worry about printing issues/exporting with overlaid items...etc. You could even get fancy with some AJAX if you wanted! I dunno, if you can present a clear reason behind why you want to do it that way... But I kind of see it as:
Create tabs on a report...user might not view other tabs = all data must be loaded on report execution = longer load time = unhappy user
Anyways, I'd still be interested if you get it working if you do decide to pursue that path!
|||
Thanks Salvo0194, but honestly speaking,i am not familiar in User Interface because we are in a three - tier framework. And that is what they want me do to.But based on my research, there really is no way that i can try to put a tab control in a rdl.And based as what you had said,i think also that it could only be the best way to do the trick.Thank you so much. But still i am waiting for some other comments that will benefit all of us for certain issues..hehe.. By the way, thanks for reminding,no programmer wants a user to be ..hehe.. o_O
I found a good example at http://blogs.msdn.com/lukaszp/archive/2005/10/11/479791.aspx
but I built one just for you with 'tabs' that work the way I believe you want them. The tab body is a rectangle and the tab tops are text boxes. The tab tops link back to the same report with a parameter set that handles the visibility.
Here is the code:

Larry thanx for the code.Funny we almost had the similar trick, but yours is nicer..hehe..uhm that finished it up..Maybe thats the only thing that we can do.But there only is one issue, uhm i dont know if you had just forgotten it,or what, but by th way,the rectangles are overlapping and it will give the user a warning, which is not good,uhm..but still thanks for that reply. It clears up thing now.But if still, you have a solution about overlapping,it is still greatly accepted(hehe..too much of me)..but maybe it would also be useful to others.Thank You o_O
|||Sorry about that, simply stack them vertically and the rendering engine should reclaim the space if they are not visible. I didn't see the warning on mine.|||Ok..thanks so much for the great help..Interesting Challenge..
Are you saying that you want your report that is rendered in HTML to have a tab control on it? Or are you asking if you can design the report page just like an HTML page, and drop all sorts of components on to it?
|||uhm..my reports were being exported in HTML,Excel and PDF..But i dont really know if it is possible to add a tab control to an rdl.I am trying to add a tab control in the COM Components, but i cannot see a tab control for it.
|||do you mean you want to see the RDL (i.e. the xml rather than the GUI)?just right click on the report in solution explorer and 'view code' - it should open up a new tab with just the raw xml as text|||
thanks for the reply, but what im trying to say here,is that,if it is possible to add a "Tab Control" (like what we see in excel) into the rdl..
|||The RDL is being rendered by the ReportView control and thus can't contain any WinForm or WebForm components. You may be able to simulate what you are wanting to do by using the hidden properties of items such as rectangles. For a wild example of what can be accomplished, take a look at the Etch A Sketch built by Brian Welcher http://blogs.msdn.com/bwelcker/archive/2005/10/29/486534.aspx(note: the report doesn't appear to be online anymore; download the source, it is well worth it)
If you post or send mock ups of what you are trying to do, I will try and help you build it.
Larry

I didn't see the warning on mine.|||Ok..thanks so much for the great help..
